South Carolina health insurance for 2027: know where Medicaid ends

South Carolina uses HealthCare.gov and has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion. Households with low income can lose weeks waiting on the wrong program, then miss the December 15 deadline for a January 1 start. This page covers what changes for South Carolina Marketplace shoppers in 2027 and how I review a plan before you commit to it.

Direct answer: South Carolina residents enroll in Marketplace plans through HealthCare.gov (healthcare.gov). For 2027 coverage, open enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027; enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage that starts January 1. I'm licensed in South Carolina (#18213932) and review options remotely from Lakeland, Florida. You keep control of your HealthCare.gov account. A review is not enrollment.

Where South Carolina shoppers get tripped up in 2027

  • South Carolina has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion. Adults with low income are not automatically placed on Medicaid. Some households belong on Healthy Connections; others belong on HealthCare.gov.
  • Do not enroll on Georgia Access for a South Carolina ZIP code. Georgia runs its own exchange. South Carolina uses HealthCare.gov. Use the state and ZIP code where you live. A Georgia Access account does not enroll South Carolina residents.
  • December 15 and January 15 are different dates. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for a January 1 start. Open Enrollment still runs through January 15, 2027, but those later enrollments generally start February 1.
  • Automatic re-enrollment is not a review. A renewed 2027 plan can change its network, drug list, and deductible. Check the exact plan ID for your county before you rely on it.

For 2026 and 2027 coverage, premium tax credits are generally available only when household income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, and there is no cap on repaying excess advance credits at tax time. HealthCare.gov determines your eligibility.

How a remote review works

  1. You send the basics. County and ZIP code, who needs coverage, projected 2027 household income, your current plan, and the doctors, facilities, and prescriptions you can't give up.
  2. I check the plans that fit. Using 2027 plan data for your ZIP code, I compare network status, drug-list tier and restrictions, pharmacy, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum.
  3. We go over the trade-offs. By phone or screen share. You make the decision and you authorize any HealthCare.gov application or plan change. I don't need your HealthCare.gov password, and you shouldn't give it to anyone.
  4. We confirm the coverage. After you enroll, make sure the first premium is paid and the insurer shows your coverage as active before you rely on it.

Questions South Carolina shoppers ask

Where do South Carolina residents sign up for Marketplace coverage in 2027?

South Carolina uses HealthCare.gov, the federal Marketplace. You can apply on HealthCare.gov, with help from a licensed agent who is registered for the plan year, or on a private enrollment site that is allowed to enroll HealthCare.gov plans. Premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions apply only to plans bought through the Marketplace, so an off-exchange plan will not carry them.

What are the 2027 open enrollment dates in South Carolina?

HealthCare.gov states that Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage starts November 1, 2026. December 15, 2026 is the last day to enroll or change for coverage that starts January 1, 2027. Open Enrollment ends January 15, 2027. Enrollments from December 16 through January 15 generally start February 1. Confirm the dates on healthcare.gov before you act.

Can an agent in Lakeland, Florida help me with a South Carolina plan?

Yes, if the agent holds an active South Carolina license and a current HealthCare.gov registration for the plan year. I hold a South Carolina nonresident license #18213932. Reviews happen by phone and screen share from Lakeland, Florida. You keep your HealthCare.gov login, and you approve any application or plan change.

What does a review cost?

There is no separate agent fee for the plan-review assistance described on this site. If you enroll in a plan, the insurer may pay me a commission. I compare plans from the insurers I'm appointed with in South Carolina, which may not be every insurer on HealthCare.gov.

My income is low. Should I be looking at Medicaid or a Marketplace plan?

South Carolina has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion (KFF, as of August 21, 2026). Many adults without dependent children do not qualify for South Carolina Medicaid on income alone, and Marketplace premium tax credits generally start at 100% of the federal poverty level, so some adults with very low income may qualify for neither. Your application result decides which applies. For South Carolina Medicaid, start with scdhhs.gov. If a Marketplace plan is the result, I can help you compare plans.

My plan or insurer is changing for 2027. Will I be moved automatically?

HealthCare.gov can renew existing members into a 2027 plan and send a notice. If your insurer is not offering plans in your area for the new year, you need to choose a new plan. Either way, check the renewed plan's network, drug coverage, and deductible before January. A renewal does not confirm that your doctors or prescriptions are still covered.

I missed open enrollment. Can I still get South Carolina coverage for 2027?

After Open Enrollment closes, you generally need a qualifying life event to enroll or change plans. Examples include losing other coverage, a move, marriage, or a new child. Many of these Special Enrollment Periods run 60 days from the event, but the rules depend on the event and your documentation. Check healthcare.gov for the event that applies to you.
