What to know first
- HospitalWise is a limited-benefit hospital indemnity policy. It pays a stated cash amount for a covered event, not the full medical bill.
- It is not major medical insurance, not a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, not a Medicare Advantage plan, not comprehensive health insurance, and not Minimum Essential Coverage under the ACA.
- Current product materials list issue ages 18 through 64. That is a different audience from AdvantageGuard, which current materials describe for ages 60 through 90.
- Current materials list Florida among available states. Availability, the writing path, and the issued terms still must be verified for your ZIP code before you apply.
This page explains the product conceptually. It is not a quote, medical advice, or a promise that HospitalWise will replace major medical coverage or pay every hospital expense.
What HospitalWise is
HospitalWise is hospital indemnity insurance underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, a UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family company. Current materials describe it as fixed-benefit coverage for hospital stays: if a covered confinement or listed event occurs, the policy may pay a set cash amount, subject to day limits and other policy rules.
That cash can help with deductibles, copays, travel, or other costs that remain after a hospital stay. It does not turn the policy into major medical insurance, a Medicare Supplement, a Medicare Advantage plan, Minimum Essential Coverage, or a substitute for ACA-compliant coverage.
Current product materials describe three plan paths that must be confirmed on the current Florida offering: Basic, Bundle 1, and Bundle 2. Bundle paths are described with outpatient-care add-ons. Bundle 2 is described with a wellness benefit. Confirm the current Florida offering before treating any path, amount, or add-on as part of a plan.
How the hospital benefit pays
You do not need a full dollar schedule to understand the design.
A covered hospital event occurs
The stay or listed service must be covered under the policy that is issued.
The policy pays the scheduled cash amount
The payment is a stated daily benefit, subject to day limits and other policy rules.
You still handle the medical bill
If the hospital charge is higher than the benefit, you may owe the difference.
Current product materials describe scheduled cash benefits, including inpatient hospital confinement of $1,000 per day with a maximum of 10 days per period of confinement; hospital observation of $1,000 per day with a maximum of 4 days per calendar year; and ICU of $1,000 per day with a maximum of 10 days per period. Bundle outpatient-care amounts described in current materials include emergency-room benefits of $500 or $750 per day, urgent-care benefits of $250 or $375 per day, and doctor-office benefits of $100 or $150 per day, with a combined maximum of 4 days per calendar year. Current materials also describe outpatient surgery of $1,000 or $2,000 per day with a maximum of 2 days; major diagnostic benefits of $500 or $1,000 per day with a maximum of 2 days; ambulance benefits of $250 or $500 for ground and $2,500 or $5,000 for air, with a combined maximum of 4 days; and a Bundle 2 wellness benefit of $75 per day with a maximum of 1 day. Those figures are illustrative only, labeled as current product materials, and are not a quote. The issued policy and the current Florida offering control which benefits apply, at what amount, and on which plan path.
Who it may fit
HospitalWise may be worth comparing if you are between ages 18 and 64, already have ACA Marketplace, employer, or other comprehensive coverage, and want a separate cash benefit if a covered hospital stay happens.
It is a weaker fit if you are looking for major medical insurance, a Medicare Supplement, a Medicare Advantage plan, ACA-compliant coverage, Minimum Essential Coverage, or hospital-stay cash benefits after age 64. If you are 60 or older, see AdvantageGuard, which current materials describe for issue ages 60 through 90. HospitalWise is not a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan, including for people under 65 who have Medicare because of disability.
How hospital indemnity differs from major medical, Medigap, and AdvantageGuard
Major medical or Medigap
- Major medical is designed as primary health coverage for a wide range of care.
- Medigap helps with cost sharing on services Medicare already covers.
- Those products are not limited-benefit hospital indemnity policies.
HospitalWise hospital indemnity
- Pays a stated cash amount for a covered hospital stay or other listed event.
- Does not replace major medical, Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or ACA coverage.
- Does not make the policy comprehensive, and it is not Minimum Essential Coverage.
AdvantageGuard (ages 60–90)
- Current materials describe this path for issue ages 60 through 90.
- Built around hospital-stay cash benefits for that older-adult audience.
- Not interchangeable with HospitalWise.
HospitalWise (ages 18–64)
- Current materials describe this path for issue ages 18 through 64.
- Uses Basic, Bundle 1, and Bundle 2 paths, including outpatient add-ons on Bundle paths.
- Not a Medigap or Medicare Advantage substitute, and not AdvantageGuard.
Accident insurance, such as AccidentWise, is tied to covered accidental injuries rather than hospital-stay cash benefits. Critical illness, such as CriticalGuard, is tied to listed qualifying diagnoses. Health ProtectorGuard pays scheduled benefits for listed medical services and is a different Golden Rule product. HospitalWise is the Basic / Bundle hospital indemnity path for ages 18 through 64. If you want the Plan 500 through 2000 schedule with a longer confinement-day design in current materials, see Hospital SafeGuard GI.
What to verify before applying
- Florida availability. Current product materials list Florida, but the offering still must be confirmed for your ZIP code and the current writing path.
- Plan path. Current materials describe Basic, Bundle 1, and Bundle 2. Review the current schedule rather than assuming a dollar amount or add-on from this page.
- Day limits. Scheduled cash benefits are described with per-day amounts and maximum days per confinement or calendar year. The issued policy controls those limits.
- Underwriting path. Current materials describe HospitalWise as guaranteed issue and state that there are no medical questions. Preexisting-condition rules still apply.
- Waiting periods. Current materials say there is no waiting period for most benefits. Wellness is described as having a 30-day waiting period in most states.
- Pre-existing-condition limitation. Current materials describe a limitation that can apply for up to 6 months after the effective date. The issued policy controls the lookback and the limitation period.
- Exclusions. Current materials exclude non-covered care, self-inflicted harm, war, military service, riot or felony, cosmetic or weight-loss procedures, pregnancy except complications, workers compensation, illegal activity, incarceration, mental or substance-use treatment, abortion-related exclusions, vision and dental except accident-related dental rules, and other listed exclusions.
- How it sits beside coverage you already have. Confirm that you are adding a limited hospital cash benefit, not replacing major medical, Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or other comprehensive coverage.
This page does not publish premiums, county-level availability, or a quote-looking rate card. Those items must be confirmed from the current Florida offering. Current materials emphasize scheduled cash benefits for covered events rather than a medical-provider network.
