What to know first
- AdvantageGuard is a limited-benefit hospital indemnity policy. It pays a stated amount for a covered event, not the full medical bill.
- It is not a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, not a Medicare Advantage plan, not comprehensive health insurance, and not Minimum Essential Coverage under the ACA.
- Current product materials list issue ages 60 through 90. The primary insured must be 60 or older. Dependent children are not eligible.
- Current materials list Florida among available states. Availability, premium, and the issued terms still must be verified before you apply.
This page explains the product conceptually. It is not a quote, medical advice, or a promise that AdvantageGuard will replace Medicare or pay every hospital expense.
What AdvantageGuard is
AdvantageGuard is hospital indemnity insurance underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, a UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family company. Current materials describe it as fixed-benefit coverage for hospital stays: if a covered confinement or listed event occurs, the policy may pay a set cash amount.
That cash can help with deductibles, copays, travel, or other costs that remain after a hospital stay. It does not turn the policy into major medical insurance, a Medicare Supplement, or a Medicare Advantage plan.
Optional ancillary riders may be available at application, such as benefits related to cancer, wellness, emergency-room or urgent-care visits, skilled nursing, outpatient surgery, diagnostics, ambulance, or certain outpatient provider-administered prescription drugs. Rider availability, waiting periods, and amounts vary. Confirm the current Florida offering before treating any rider as part of a plan.
How the hospital benefit pays
You do not need a full dollar schedule to understand the design.
A covered hospital event occurs
The stay or listed service must be covered under the policy that is issued.
The policy pays the scheduled amount
The payment is a stated cash benefit, subject to day limits and other policy rules.
You still handle the medical bill
If the hospital charge is higher than the benefit, you may owe the difference.
Current product materials describe a range of daily confinement amounts and maximum-day choices that are selected when applying. Any dollar range discussed in a review is illustrative only and is subject to current Florida terms and the issued policy. It is not a quote.
Who it may fit
AdvantageGuard may be worth comparing if you are between ages 60 and 90, already have Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Marketplace, employer, or other comprehensive coverage, and want a separate cash benefit if a covered hospital stay happens.
It is a weaker fit if you are looking for a Medicare Supplement, a Medicare Advantage plan, ACA-compliant major medical coverage, or a policy for dependent children. The primary insured must be 60 or older. A spouse may also be eligible under current materials; confirm household eligibility on the current Florida application. If you are 18 through 64 and want hospital-stay cash benefits, compare HospitalWise and Hospital SafeGuard GI. They are different hospital indemnity schedules, not this 60-and-older product.
How hospital indemnity differs from Medigap and Medicare Advantage
Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage
- Medigap helps with cost sharing on services Medicare already covers.
- Medicare Advantage is a Medicare health plan that delivers Part A and Part B benefits, and often Part D.
- Those products are Medicare options. They are not hospital indemnity policies.
AdvantageGuard hospital indemnity
- Pays a stated cash amount for a covered hospital stay or other listed event.
- Does not replace Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or ACA coverage.
- Does not make the policy comprehensive, and it is not Minimum Essential Coverage.
If you are comparing Medicare choices, start with the Medicare overview. If you are 18 through 64 and want hospital-stay cash benefits rather than this 60-and-older product, compare HospitalWise and Hospital SafeGuard GI. If you are comparing scheduled medical-service benefits rather than hospital-stay cash benefits, see Health ProtectorGuard. If you want accident-only cash benefits rather than hospital-stay cash benefits, see AccidentWise. If you want critical-illness cash benefits for listed qualifying events rather than hospital-stay cash benefits, see CriticalGuard.
What to verify before applying
- Florida availability. Current product materials list Florida, but the offering still must be confirmed for your ZIP code and the current application.
- Benefit choices. Daily confinement amounts, maximum days, and any riders are selected at application. Review the current schedule rather than assuming a dollar amount from this page.
- Underwriting path. Current materials say coverage may be guaranteed issue or simplified issue, depending on the benefits chosen.
- Waiting periods. Many standard benefits are described as having no waiting period. Some riders, including cancer, wellness, and outpatient provider-administered prescription-drug benefits, can have a waiting period.
- Pre-existing-condition rules. Current materials describe a limitation that can apply after coverage begins. The issued policy controls the lookback and the limitation period.
- How it sits beside coverage you already have. Confirm that you are adding a limited cash benefit, not replacing Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or other comprehensive coverage.
- Exclusions and Florida form rules. The policy has exclusions and state variations. Current Florida materials use form HI-GRI-FL. The issued policy controls.
This page does not publish premiums, county-level availability, or network rules. Those items must be confirmed from the current Florida offering. Current materials emphasize scheduled cash benefits for covered events rather than a medical-provider network.
