What to know first
- CriticalGuard is a limited-benefit critical illness product. It pays only for listed qualifying events, not the full medical bill.
- It is not major medical insurance, not a Medicare replacement, not ACA-compliant coverage, not Minimum Essential Coverage, and not a substitute for primary coverage.
- Current product materials list issue ages 18 through 90. The chosen lifetime maximum is selected in $5,000 increments, with age-banded maximum ranges described in current materials.
- Current materials list Florida among available states. Availability, the writing path, and the issued terms still must be verified for your ZIP code before you apply.
This page explains the product conceptually. It is not a quote, medical advice, or a promise that CriticalGuard will replace major medical coverage or pay every diagnosis or medical expense.
What CriticalGuard is
CriticalGuard is critical-illness insurance underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, a UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family company. Current materials describe it as fixed-benefit coverage for listed qualifying events: if a listed diagnosis or event occurs and the claim is payable, the policy may pay a percentage of a chosen lifetime maximum, or another listed amount.
That cash can help with deductibles, copays, travel, or other costs that remain after a qualifying event. It does not turn the policy into major medical insurance, Medicare coverage, ACA-compliant health insurance, or a substitute for primary coverage.
Current product materials describe two plan paths that must be confirmed on the current Florida offering: a cancer, heart, and stroke path, and a fuller critical-illness suite. Optional riders described in current materials include wellness, outpatient prescription-drug, and telemedicine benefits. Rider availability, waiting periods, and amounts vary. Confirm the current Florida offering before treating any rider as part of a plan.
How a critical-illness benefit pays
You do not need a full dollar schedule to understand the design.
A listed qualifying event occurs
The diagnosis or event must be a qualifying event under the policy that is issued.
The policy may pay a percentage of the chosen maximum
Current materials describe a lifetime maximum selected in $5,000 increments. Listed events may pay a percentage of that maximum, or another listed amount.
You still handle the medical bill
The cash benefit is separate from the medical bill. If the charge is higher than the benefit, you may still owe the difference.
Current product materials describe a chosen lifetime maximum in $5,000 increments. They describe life-threatening cancer, heart attack, stroke, ALS, coma, end-stage renal failure, major organ transplant, and advanced Alzheimer's disease as events that may pay 100% of that maximum; cancer in situ, a benign brain tumor, or a heart illness as events that may pay 25%; loss of independent living as an event that may pay 50%; a listed skin-cancer amount of $500; a listed COVID ICU amount of $10,000; and an additional pregnancy benefit of 50% of the qualifying-event benefit where applicable. Those figures are illustrative only, labeled as current product materials, and are not a quote. The issued policy and the current Florida offering control which events pay, and at what percentage or amount.
Who it may fit
CriticalGuard may be worth comparing if you are between ages 18 and 90, already have ACA Marketplace, employer, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, or other comprehensive coverage, and want a separate cash benefit if a listed qualifying event happens.
It is a weaker fit if you are looking for major medical insurance, a Medicare replacement, ACA-compliant coverage, Minimum Essential Coverage, or a policy that pays for diagnoses that are not listed qualifying events. Confirm household eligibility and the available lifetime-maximum range for your issue age on the current Florida application.
How critical illness differs from major medical, Medigap, hospital indemnity, and accident insurance
Major medical or Medigap
- Major medical is designed as primary health coverage for a wide range of care.
- Medigap helps with cost sharing on services Medicare already covers.
- Those products are not limited-benefit critical illness policies.
CriticalGuard critical illness
- Pays a cash amount only for listed qualifying events, often as a percentage of a chosen lifetime maximum.
- Does not replace major medical, Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or ACA coverage.
- Does not make the policy comprehensive, and it is not Minimum Essential Coverage.
Hospital indemnity, such as HospitalWise or Hospital SafeGuard GI for ages 18 through 64 or AdvantageGuard for ages 60 through 90, is tied to covered hospital stays rather than a listed critical-illness diagnosis. Accident insurance, such as AccidentWise, is tied to covered accidental injuries. Health ProtectorGuard pays scheduled benefits for listed medical services and is a different Golden Rule product. CriticalGuard is the critical-illness cash-benefit path.
What to verify before applying
- Florida availability. Current product materials list Florida, but the offering still must be confirmed for your ZIP code and the current writing path.
- Benefit maximum. Current materials describe a lifetime maximum selected in $5,000 increments, with age-banded maximum ranges. Review the current Florida range rather than assuming a dollar amount from this page.
- Plan type. Confirm whether the current offering is a cancer, heart, and stroke path or the fuller critical-illness suite, and which qualifying events apply to that path.
- Waiting period. Current materials describe a 30-day waiting period for plan qualifying events after the effective date in most states. Optional wellness and outpatient prescription-drug riders are described as having 30-day waiting periods. The telemedicine rider is described as not subject to a waiting period.
- Pre-existing-condition limitation. Current materials describe a limitation that generally can apply for up to 12 months after the effective date. State variations may modify that rule. The issued policy controls.
- Underwriting path. Current materials say guaranteed issue may be available for select benefit amounts and issue ages. Otherwise, simplified issue may apply depending on age and the benefits selected.
- Exclusions. Current materials exclude diagnoses before the effective date or before the waiting period, war, self-inflicted harm, intoxication or drug-related qualifying events, felony, riot, incarceration, AIDS or an AIDS-related condition where applicable, non-qualifying conditions, certain high-risk activities on heart and stroke plans, and other listed full-suite exclusions.
- How it sits beside coverage you already have. Confirm that you are adding a limited critical-illness cash benefit, not replacing major medical, Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or other comprehensive coverage.
This page does not publish premiums, county-level availability, or a quote-looking benefit schedule. Those items must be confirmed from the current Florida offering. Current materials emphasize cash benefits for listed qualifying events rather than a medical-provider network.
