What to know first

This page explains the product conceptually. It is not a quote, medical advice, or a promise that Hospital SafeGuard GI will replace major medical coverage or pay every hospital expense.

What Hospital SafeGuard GI is

Hospital SafeGuard GI is fixed indemnity hospital coverage underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, a UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family company. Current materials describe it as limited-benefit coverage: if a covered confinement or listed event occurs, the policy may pay a set cash amount from the chosen Plan 500, 750, 1000, or 2000 schedule, subject to day limits and other policy rules.

That cash can help with deductibles, copays, travel, or other costs that remain after a hospital stay. It does not turn the policy into major medical insurance, a Medicare Supplement, a Medicare Advantage plan, Minimum Essential Coverage, or a substitute for ACA-compliant coverage.

The plan name includes “GI” because current materials describe this path as not subject to medical underwriting. That is not a promise of immediate coverage for every condition. A preexisting-condition limitation can still apply after the effective date. Confirm the current Florida writing path before treating any underwriting description as final.

How fixed indemnity hospital benefits pay

You do not need a quote-looking rate card to understand the design. Choose a plan tier, then the policy pays scheduled cash amounts when a listed event occurs.

1

A covered hospital event occurs

The stay, admission, or listed service must be covered under the policy that is issued.

2

The chosen plan pays the scheduled amount

Plan 500, 750, 1000, or 2000 sets the daily cash amounts, subject to day limits.

3

You still handle the medical bill

If the hospital charge is higher than the benefit, you may owe the difference.

Plan 500Lowest listed daily confinement amount in current materials
Plan 750Next listed daily confinement amount in current materials
Plan 1000Higher listed daily confinement amount in current materials
Plan 2000Highest listed daily confinement amount in current materials

Current product materials describe inpatient hospital confinement of $500, $750, $1,000, or $2,000 per day, depending on plan, with a maximum of 31 days per period of confinement. ICU or CCU is described at the same daily amounts, in addition to the inpatient confinement benefit. First hospital admission is described as $1,000, $1,500, $2,000, or $2,500, with a maximum of 1 day per calendar year. Inpatient surgical is described as $500, $500, $1,000, or $1,500 per day, with a maximum of 2 days per year. Other listed amounts in current materials include emergency-room illness of $250 per day and injury of $500 per day, with a maximum of 2 days per year; ambulance of $500 per day for ground or water and $3,000 or $5,000 per day for air, depending on plan; doctor or urgent-care visits of $50, $75, $100, or $100 per day; wellness of $50 to $200 per day with a maximum of 1 day per year; and labs, X-ray, MRI, PET, CT, and outpatient surgery benefits that vary by plan. Those figures are illustrative only, labeled as current product materials, and are not a quote. This page does not publish premiums. The issued policy and the current Florida offering control which benefits apply, at what amount, and on which plan.

Who it may fit

Hospital SafeGuard GI may be worth comparing if you are between ages 18 and 64, already have ACA Marketplace, employer, or other comprehensive coverage, and want a separate cash benefit if a covered hospital stay happens, using the Plan 500 through 2000 schedule rather than a Basic or Bundle hospital indemnity path.

It is a weaker fit if you are looking for major medical insurance, a Medicare Supplement, a Medicare Advantage plan, ACA-compliant coverage, Minimum Essential Coverage, or hospital-stay cash benefits after age 64. If you are 60 or older, see AdvantageGuard. If you want the Basic / Bundle 1 / Bundle 2 hospital indemnity path instead of this numbered plan schedule, see HospitalWise.

How it differs from major medical, Medigap, HospitalWise, and AdvantageGuard

Major medical or Medigap

  • Major medical is designed as primary health coverage for a wide range of care.
  • Medigap helps with cost sharing on services Medicare already covers.
  • Those products are not limited-benefit hospital indemnity policies.

Hospital SafeGuard GI

  • Pays a stated cash amount for a covered hospital stay or other listed event.
  • Does not replace major medical, Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or ACA coverage.
  • Does not make the policy comprehensive, and it is not Minimum Essential Coverage.

HospitalWise (ages 18–64)

  • Uses Basic, Bundle 1, and Bundle 2 paths, including outpatient add-ons on Bundle paths.
  • Current materials typically describe a shorter confinement-day maximum, such as 10 days.
  • A different Golden Rule hospital indemnity product from Hospital SafeGuard GI.

Hospital SafeGuard GI (ages 18–64)

  • Uses Plan 500, 750, 1000, or 2000 rather than Basic or Bundle paths.
  • Current materials describe a 31-day inpatient confinement maximum per period, with ICU or CCU in addition.
  • Current materials say it is not subject to medical underwriting. Preexisting-condition rules still apply.

AdvantageGuard is hospital-stay cash benefits for issue ages 60 through 90, not this Plan 500 through 2000 schedule. Accident insurance, such as AccidentWise, is tied to covered accidental injuries rather than hospital-stay cash benefits. Critical illness, such as CriticalGuard, is tied to listed qualifying diagnoses. Health ProtectorGuard pays scheduled benefits for listed medical services and is a different Golden Rule product. Hospital SafeGuard GI is the Plan 500 through 2000 fixed-indemnity hospital path.

What to verify before applying

  • Florida availability. Current product materials list Florida, but the offering still must be confirmed for your ZIP code and the current writing path.
  • Plan tier. Current materials describe Plan 500, Plan 750, Plan 1000, and Plan 2000. Review the current schedule rather than assuming a dollar amount from this page.
  • Day limits, including the 31-day confinement design. Current materials describe inpatient confinement with a maximum of 31 days per period, plus separate limits for admission, ICU or CCU, surgery, emergency-room, ambulance, and other listed events.
  • No medical underwriting versus the preexisting-condition limitation. Current materials say the product is not subject to medical underwriting. A preexisting-condition limitation can still apply for up to 12 months after the effective date, with lookback language that references the 6 months immediately preceding the effective date.
  • Wellness waiting period. Current materials describe a 30-day waiting period for wellness or preventive care. No other waiting period was found in the current brochure for the listed fixed benefits.
  • Exclusions. Current materials exclude losses outside the policy period, war, self-inflicted injury, riot or felony, military service, intoxication or drugs, cosmetic treatment, pregnancy except complications, rehabilitation or custodial care, high-risk activities, workers compensation, taxi or passenger transport for profit, non-commercial aircraft, immediate-family services, non-medically necessary services, incarceration, mental or substance-use treatment, abortion-related exclusions, dental, vision, and hearing limits, non-U.S. services except emergency, experimental treatment, and other listed exclusions.
  • How it sits beside coverage you already have. Confirm that you are adding a limited hospital cash benefit, not replacing major medical, Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, or other comprehensive coverage. Also confirm whether HospitalWise or AdvantageGuard is the better hospital indemnity comparison for your age and schedule preference.

This page does not publish premiums, county-level availability, or a quote-looking rate card. Those items must be confirmed from the current Florida offering. Current materials emphasize scheduled cash benefits for covered events rather than a medical-provider network.
