When Can I Switch Medicare Plans in Florida?

A plain-English breakdown of the four 2026 Medicare switching windows for Polk County residents — exact dates, exact rules, and which one applies to you.

Short answer: Florida residents can switch Medicare plans during one of four windows in 2026: AEP (October 15 – December 7), MA-OEP (January 1 – March 31, only if already on Medicare Advantage), your Initial Enrollment Period (the 7 months around turning 65), or any qualifying Special Enrollment Period triggered by life events.

The four 2026 Medicare switching windows

AEP

Annual Enrollment Period — October 15 – December 7, 2026

The biggest switching window of the year. Any Medicare beneficiary in Polk County can:

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare (and vice versa)
  • Switch Part D prescription drug plans

New plan takes effect January 1, 2027. AEP is when most Lakeland Medicare clients make changes — and it's when networks, formularies, and benefit designs all reset for the new plan year.

MA-OEP

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment — January 1 – March 31, 2026

Only applies if you were enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1. During MA-OEP you can:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan (one switch, not unlimited)
  • Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare, with the option to add a Part D plan and apply for Medigap (subject to underwriting outside guaranteed-issue)

You cannot use MA-OEP to switch from Original Medicare into Medicare Advantage. That requires AEP or a Special Enrollment Period.

IEP

Initial Enrollment Period — Around Your 65th Birthday

Your IEP is a 7-month window: 3 months before the month you turn 65, the month of your birthday, and 3 months after. Signing up in the first 3 months means coverage starts on the first of your birthday month — the cleanest entry path.

Missing IEP without other creditable coverage can lead to lifetime late-enrollment penalties on Part B and Part D. Don't miss it.

SEP

Special Enrollment Periods — Triggered by Life Events

SEPs let you switch outside of AEP and MA-OEP when something specific happens. Common SEP triggers in Florida:

  • Moving to a new ZIP code, especially out of your plan's service area
  • Losing employer-based coverage (yours or a spouse's)
  • Qualifying for Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy for Part D)
  • Qualifying for or losing Medicaid (Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care)
  • Entering or leaving a long-term care facility
  • Plan contract non-renewal by the carrier or CMS

SEPs are time-limited — usually 60 days from the qualifying event. Document the event (dated letter, lease, termination notice) before applying.

Medigap is different — there's no single annual window

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans don't follow AEP. You can apply any time, but unless you're inside your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment window (which starts when you first enroll in Part B at age 65 or older) or you have a guaranteed-issue right, the carrier can underwrite you for health and may decline coverage. That's the biggest reason it pays to get the timing right when you first turn 65.

Should I switch every year?

Not always. But every Polk County Medicare enrollee should review their plan every AEP. Carrier networks, formularies, and benefit designs can change every January 1. A plan that fit you in 2025 may be wrong in 2026 because:

The review is free with a local broker. The switch only happens if a better plan exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)?

October 15 – December 7. Any Medicare beneficiary in Florida can change Advantage plans, switch between Advantage and Original Medicare, or change Part D plans. New plan starts January 1.

What is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP)?

January 1 – March 31. Applies only if you're already on Medicare Advantage. One switch allowed, or drop back to Original Medicare.

Can I switch Medicare plans outside of AEP and MA-OEP in Florida?

Only with a qualifying Special Enrollment Period — typically 60 days from a life event like moving, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help.

When can I first sign up for Medicare in Florida?

Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period: 3 months before your 65th birthday month, the month itself, and 3 months after. Sign up in the first 3 months for clean coverage on the first of your birthday month.

Can I switch Medigap plans any time in Florida?

You can apply any time, but outside your initial 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment or a guaranteed-issue right, the carrier can underwrite and may decline based on health.

Should I switch Medicare plans every year during AEP?

No — but you should review every year. Plan terms change every January 1 and a plan that fit last year may not fit this year.
